Marimekko partnered with Spinnova, a Finnish company creating innovative new fabrics made of wood pulp, with no harmful chemicals and no waste streams. The Spinnova fabric looks and feels similar to cotton but uses 99% less water to produce.

Marimekko ready-to-wear designer Riikka Buri designed a knit jersey top, plus a denim-like jacket and bag in a woven fabric. The Spinnova fiber was combined with cotton and/or lyocell. From Marimekko: “The Spinnova fiber represents a very promising new sustainable material innovation.” Marimekko’s sustainability agenda includes increasing its use of sustainable materials for products, as well as for packaging.

Although there are other fabrics made of wood pulp, Spinnova’s patented fiber is unique due its lack of harmful chemicals used in the process. Other cellulosic fibers such as viscose rayon are notorious polluters due to chemical run-off. Spinnova uses wood from FSC-certified forests, which means they are sustainably managed. The Spinnova process has no waste streams, which is unique in the world of textile production.
