There are basically two options for potted Christmas trees: 3-4 foot trees that tend to come in “grower” pots and are usually available from your local nursery or seasonal tree seller, or 2-3 foot “tabletop” trees that may come from a florist, tree seller or are widely available online.

We also like the idea of using alternatives to pine trees, like this olive tree from Food52. It comes with a festive bow, and can live on for years after the holidays in its pot or in the ground. Any of these tabletop options – although they’re not sturdy enough for regular tree lights – can be lit with mini lightweight fairy lights like these from Amazon. Plus these lights are battery operated, so no need to place your potted Christmas tree near an outlet.

How to Care For Your Potted Christmas Tree

  1. Make It Last– Your live tree will be happier outdoors, so try to keep it inside no more than 12 days.
  2. Drainage – Ensure that your pot has proper drainage to avoid root rot. It should be in a pot with a hole at the bottom, with a dish or tray underneath to catch excess water.
  3. Watering – Potted plants can dry out very quickly, so check your tree daily to make sure it doesn’t get too dry, and water every 2-3 days.
  4. Indoor Heat – Your potted Christmas tree will be happiest away from direct heat, so avoid placing it near radiators, fireplaces or ovens.
  5. Planting Outdoors – Keep your tree outdoors in its pot after the holidays, and plant it in the ground in early spring.
